Why Is It Important To Have Your Own Personal Opt-In Page?

This is an example of an Opt-In page box.

What is an opt-in page? When you click on a site, they offer you something free or you get entry to the next page. This is an exchange for your name, email and sometimes your phone number. An opt-in page forces the reader to opt-in to “Find out more”. This could be to find out more about your product, receive a report, receive a download and so on. Where does this information go? It goes to a list owned by a company or person. It may seem simpler and cheaper to build a list of leads with the opt-in system your company provides for you, but is this a wise decision?

When someone opts-into your page, their name and emails goes to your list. You are building assets by building your own list. While you are using a company opt-in system, the lead may or may not go exclusively to you. Some companies have the name and email go to more than one location. Depending on where the other list goes, it may or may not be beneficial to you. You may have given someone else authority to have access to your list. Depending on who this person is, may determine if it is in your favor to have them contact the person who opted-in.

The person who has opted-in has become YOUR lead on YOUR list, and is YOUR asset. The goal is to build a huge list (size of a football stadium or larger) as this is a numbers game. They may not want to join you or buy from you at the moment, but they are now open to looking and listening to what you have to offer, as they hope to gain value and knowledge. With each email they receive they are looking for value and seeing if you are real. The longer they stay subscribed on your list, the more trust they gain and the more they see you as a valued leader. Over time, as their trust builds with you, you gain more and more influence with them. Remember that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. So, when opportunity arises, BANG, they join you! It is like building a savings account for the future. You don’t know exactly when the next opportunity will come along or when they will feel a future need, but they are saved in your trust bank. Just like you gain interest on your money in a savings account, you gain more and more trust over time with the leads who have opted-in on your lists.

So, what happens if you have used your company’s opt-in page to build your list and you leave that company? Do the lists come with you? Probably not! Using a company’s opt-in page is like renting, you have built an asset for that company, not for you. This is why you want to own your own opt-in page. The lead goes to your list, and only your list, in your asset bank, not the company’s asset bank you are presently with. There are other companies around who can build an opt-in page for you. They may cost more upfront, but you will exclusively own your list, not rent the list you have built for your company. Companies like AWeber and Get Response allow you to build, store and communicate with the people on the lists that you own. You can keep the person who has opted-in for a long as you want, no matter what company you partner with.

So, is it really cheaper to go with the opt-in pages your company provides or do you want to build your own assets with your own list? The correct answer is in how you project your future. If you will never have a future need for the prospects you have built a relationship with, and then go with the companies opt-in pages. However, if you aren’t sure of your future, why not keep the opt-in asset you worked so hard to build?
